Message status definitions & codes
This article provides an overview of message status definitions and codes and how you can view them when running reports. It explains various statuses such as scheduled, sending, sent, failed, rejected, stopped, submitted, and delivered, helping users understand the delivery process. Additionally, the article aids users in troubleshooting when messages are not being received.
Note - If a message is marked as Failed or Rejected you may still be charged, as once the message passes our gateway we are usually charged by the carrier regardless of the delivery outcome. If you are concerned about a specific message or number please let us know and we can investigate with the carrier.
To view the Delivery Status for a sent campaign, navigate to Messaging > SMS messaging > Campaign reports > then select the campaign you wish to review from the list.
You'll be presented with a dashboard that shows you metrics on the delivery of that campaign. For more information on the metrics that are available for a campaign and how to customize them see our article on Campaign Analytics.
You can also view metrics on the performance of all your campaigns at once. To view this navigate to Messaging > SMS messaging > Campaign reports > then select the Campaign Performance tab. For more information on the metrics available on this tab see the Analyzing overall campaign performance article
Message Status Definitions
A brief definition of these statuses is as follows:
Delivered: Messages that have been successfully delivered to the intended recipients.
Expired: Messages that timed out and were no longer deliverable.
Failed: Messages that were not delivered due to carrier issues, technical errors, etc. Learn more
Invalid: Messages rejected during processing due to invalid or missing recipient data. These messages were not sent.
Rejected: Messages blocked before being dispatched from our gateway. Typically caused by compliance rules, invalid numbers, or account limits. Learn more
Scheduled: messages in this status are scheduled to be sent but haven't been sent yet. You can review scheduled messages by going to Campaigns and then Scheduled.
Sending: Messages that are currently being sent. They’ve reached the messaging gateway, but we haven’t received a response from the recipient’s carrier yet.
Sent: This is an umbrella term that covers all messages confirmed as dispatched from our gateway. Includes Submitted, Delivered, and Undelivered messages. Rejected messages are excluded as they were blocked before sending.
Stopped: Messages that were manually halted during sending.
Submitted: Messages that have been sent but not yet confirmed as delivered by the carrier.
Undelivered: This is an umbrella term that covers all messages dispatched from our gateway that did not reach the recipient's device. Includes Failed, Stopped, and Expired messages.
Important - the Delivery Receipts feature needs to be activated to ensure message delivery statuses are updated. This article can show you how.
