An Alpha Tag (3-11 characters in length) is when the sender name or a string of text appears in place of a phone number as the sender ID. It offers instant brand recognition but is suitable for one-way messages only - recipients can't reply to messages sent from an alpha tag.
1. In the menu, click on Settings, then select Numbers & Channels:
2. Select the Active tab.
3. In the Alpha tags section, click on Add a tag:
4. In the resulting modal, configure the following:
A) Enter the name you want to use to send messages.
B) Check the box to confirm that you have a specific and relevant use case for this alpha tag.
C) Click the button to Submit alpha tag for approval - your Alpha Tag request will then be reviewed, and automatically activated if/when approved.
Note - While the Alpha Tag approval process is normally within an hour or two, it can take upto 24 hours during high demand periods. All new Alpha Tags that enter the Telstra network (in Australia) for the first time will be subject Telstra's message filtering process. This process can cause a sending delay of up to five minutes for the very first message sent from the new Alpha Tag. After the initial message successfully passes the filtering process, all subsequent messages sent from the same Alpha Tag will move through the messaging gateway as normal. |
Once your request for an Alpha Tag has been approved, you can select it on an ad-hoc basis when sending a new message by selecting the option from the Sender ID list in the New Message window:
